Micro-Grants

Supporting marine research through targeted funding and collaborative project support.

Apply for Funding

Program Overview

The Micro-Grants Program supports marine research projects through targeted funding and collaborative project support as part of broader marine research funding and support efforts. Micro funding refers to smaller, focused allocations—typically in the range of a few hundred to one thousand dollars—designed to support specific project needs rather than general organizational funding.

This approach is intended for defined initiatives with a clear objective, timeline, and expected outcome. It is best suited for projects where modest funding, combined with collaboration and field support, can create meaningful progress.

We operate on a rolling basis through seasonal funding cycles, allowing us to evaluate and support projects as they are proposed. This keeps the program active, responsive, and focused on initiatives where timely support can make a measurable impact. This program is designed to support defined marine research efforts through focused, outcome-driven funding and collaboration.

What We Fund

We support defined marine research projects with clear objectives, scope, and measurable outcomes. Supported work may include species tracking, field observation, identification studies, data collection, and research tied to marine ecosystems and species behavior.

Projects are expected to demonstrate a clear research objective, a practical plan for execution, and defined deliverables. We do not provide general operating support or unrestricted funding.

How We Support Projects

We support projects through a combination of targeted funding and hands-on collaboration tied to research execution and documentation. While micro-grants provide focused financial support, our approach extends beyond funding to include field participation, technical support, and media development where it adds value.

Depending on the needs of the project, we may contribute through in-water support, photography and videography, or general field assistance. This collaborative model allows us to actively participate in the work being done while helping partners document and communicate their impact.

All support is aligned with the defined scope of the project, ensuring that both funding and involvement contribute directly to the intended outcomes. Any additional support we provide—field participation, media, or technical assistance—is offered at no cost and does not reduce or affect the funding allocated to the project. In some cases, projects may also benefit from broader marine research fieldwork collaboration.

What We Look For

We look to support projects that are clearly defined, actionable, and capable of delivering measurable results within a specific timeframe. Successful proposals demonstrate a strong understanding of the problem being addressed, a practical approach to execution, and a clear vision for impact.

  • A defined research question, objective, or area of inquiry

  • A realistic timeline for execution

  • Measurable outputs, findings, or expected results

  • A clear explanation of how funds will be used

  • Demonstrated capability to carry out the work

  • Willingness to engage in a collaborative partnership where support may extend beyond funding

  • A commitment to sharing project outputs, data, or documentation generated through the work

  • Alignment with marine research and ocean conservation priorities

What to Expect

Our process is designed to be straightforward, responsive, and focused on identifying projects where timely support can enable meaningful research outcomes. While each project is evaluated individually, the general process follows a consistent structure.

  1. Submit an Application
Provide an overview of your project, including objectives, timeline, and how funding will be used.

  2. Initial Review
We assess alignment with our focus areas, project scope, and potential for measurable impact.

  3. Follow-Up Discussion
If your project is a good fit, we may connect to better understand your approach, needs, and opportunities for collaboration.

  4. Funding Decision
Selected projects will receive funding based on scope, timing, and overall fit with our program.

  5. Project Execution & Collaboration
Funding may be paired with collaboration, where we contribute through field support, media, or technical assistance when aligned with the project.

  6. Outcome Sharing
Projects are expected to share results, insights, or documentation generated through the work.
